Raise Your Glass To NightCap

In the summer of 2015, the University of Central Florida required its incoming first-year class to take an online course about substance education. Students learned the reason behind the lines on a red solo cup or how easily someone can spike your drink. I took this course. I was terrified. In the blink of an eye, someone could use a beverage to incapacitate you. How can you protect yourself?

Meet Shirah Benarde, the CEO of NightCap. She founded NightCap to help keep you and your drink safe wherever you go. I spoke with her to learn more about the company, its mission, and why NightCap is something everyone should consider for themselves and the people they love.

1. What inspired the creation of NightCap?

My friend’s drink was spiked at the bar and I dreamt up a solution of a scrunchie that doubles as a drink cover to protect yourself when going out. When I woke up I created the first prototype out of my moms stockings and a scrunchie from my room.

2. How has the company evolved since its founding?

NightCap has sold over 1 million units in over 70 countries and partnered with over 200 universities. We also helped pass Law AB 2375, mandating drink covers in bars in California.

3. How do you incorporate your mission and vision into NightCap products?

We create products to protect people no matter who you are/ what you’re drinking. We create fun solutions to a serious problem. Our products have a convenient and fun element to them.

4. What advice would you give to students and young professionals who want to start a business?

Get comfortable with the uncomfortable. Do things outside of our comfort zone, it’s crucial for growth personally and professional.

5. What's the future of the company?

Making drink covers as accessible as a napkin. We want to see safety available where and when you need it, at bars, sports venues, music festivals, etc.
