A (Oral) Clean Slate With Slate Flosser

In 2001, cartoon teen idol Chip Skylark gave us the dental hygiene anthem My Shiny Teeth and Me. In the music video, two animated teeth flossed each other as Skylark cheerfully reminded us to take care of our smiles. As a kid, that jingle lived rent-free in my head every time I sat in the dentist’s chair.

As an adult, I try to be far more regimented with my dental routine, but let’s be honest, that is easier said than done. Between busy schedules and decision fatigue, even flossing can fall by the wayside. That is what led me to start paying closer attention to the oral care products I actually enjoy using.

Enter Slate Flosser. Positioned at the forefront of the dental industry, Slate is rethinking an everyday essential with intention and design in mind. I spoke with the Slate team to learn more about how the brand is changing the way we think about floss.

Slate Flosser Interview

  1. What makes Slate Floser different from other dental hygiene companies?

Slate isn’t just a dental hygiene company—we’re an oral health and longevity company. Our whole mission is to help people live longer, healthier lives by reducing inflammation at its source: the mouth.

Most people were never truly taught why we floss. There are two reasons:

  1. To clean between the teeth to prevent cavities.

  2. To stimulate the gums to reduce inflammation and gum disease—one of the biggest drivers of chronic health issues in the body.

And here’s the part most people don’t realize: Brushing only cleans about 60% of your mouth. The other 40%—the cracks, crevices, and between the teeth—is where the stickiest bacteria live.

That’s why we call Slate flosser “the other toothbrush.”It fills the gap brushing can’t reach.

Traditional flossing is hard for most people to do consistently, so Slate’s dentist-invented 3-in-1 flosser was created for the average person—to make flossing so easy, fast, and effective that you actually want to do it.

Slate is also woman-run, and many of us are moms. We know what it’s like to build habits for ourselves and our kids, so everything we create is designed to be simple, approachable, and sustainable—not clinical or intimidating.

At the end of the day, Slate is about more than clean teeth. It’s about supporting your whole-body health, reducing inflammation, and helping you stay strong and well for the long run.

  1. How has Slate Flosr evolved since its founding?

Slate started back in 2020 when Dr. Snyder submitted the original patents and began building the early prototypes. By 2021, he realized he needed to stay focused on his work as a dentist, and that’s when I stepped in to bring the company to life and turn this idea into a real brand with real impact.

Our growth since then has been incredible. In our first year with product actually available to sell, we did $200,000 in just two months. In 2023, we crossed $1 million in revenue, and we’ve been scaling rapidly ever since. In 2024 alone, we grew 268%.

But the evolution of Slate hasn’t just been financial—it’s also been strategic and emotional.

We started very data-focused, which makes sense coming from the dental world. But what we learned is that the average consumer just wants flossing to be easy. They don’t need charts or dental terminology—they need clarity, simplicity, and confidence.

So Slate evolved into a company that educates people on why flossing matters while giving them a tool that makes it effortless.

Along the way, we’ve grown our team and refined the product itself. Our patented 3-in-1 floss heads now include:

  • Woven, chemical-free floss

  • Gum Sweeps™, which clean the place where gum disease starts—the gumline

  • A built-in tongue scraper for the other source of bad breath

Because if you’ve ever had bad breath, it usually comes from two places:bacteria in your gums or bacteria on your tongue.Slate eliminates both.

Today, Slate is more than a flosser company. We’re building a movement around preventive care, longevity, and reducing inflammation so people can live stronger, healthier lives. And we’re just getting started.

  1. How does Slate Flosser incorporate its mission and vision into its products?

Our mission and values—education, inclusivity, empowerment, sustainability, and innovation—show up in everything we build at Slate. We’re not creating dental gadgets. We’re creating tools that make oral health accessible, simple, and empowering for every person, at every stage of life.

Education drives how we design and communicate.

Most people were never taught why flossing matters, so everything we create—from our products to our packaging to our social content—helps people understand how to protect their long-term health by reducing inflammation in the mouth.

Inclusivity means designing for real people, not perfect dental patients. The truth is: our flagship rechargeable flosser isn’t accessible for everyone. So we expanded our line and created the Mini Flosser, using the same patented floss heads, to give more people an affordable entry point. And now we’re working on a third product that will make flossing accessible for every person in the world.

Empowerment shows up in how easy our products are to use. We wanted to create a tool that a five-year-old could use confidently and that an 80-year-old with dexterity issues could use comfortably. I have five kids—and they all floss on their own now. As a tired mom at night, that’s a win. But even more importantly, it empowers them to take charge of their health from a young age.

Sustainability is reflected in our materials and packaging. All of our packaging is recyclable, and our reusable floss heads dramatically reduce waste compared to traditional single-use floss picks.

Innovation is at the core of Slate. Our patented 3-in-1 floss heads—woven floss, Gum Sweeps™, and a tongue scraper—were designed to disrupt bacteria more effectively than anything else on the market. And we’re constantly developing new solutions to make preventive care easier and more accessible.

At Slate, our mission isn’t something we put on a wall. It’s something we design with—every day, in every product, for every person.

  1. What is the future of the company?

No founder can predict the future perfectly, but we can build toward a vision—and Slate’s vision is big, intentional, and incredibly exciting.

We’re preparing for major retail expansion, because 46% of consumers still buy their oral health products in stores. Meeting people where they already shop is a critical part of making preventive care accessible. Getting Slate onto retail shelves is a major next step in becoming a household name.

We’re also focused on rhythm and behavior, not just products. People are used to receiving dental care items every three months, so we’re evolving our subscription model to match those natural habits—making it easier for people to stay consistent with their oral health routines.

Our long-term vision is simple but ambitious:We want Slate to become the brand people think of when they think of flossing. Not just in the U.S., but globally.

We believe flossing is the missing link in preventive health and longevity. As we continue to grow, innovate, and expand our product line, our goal is to help people reduce inflammation, strengthen their health, and improve their lives—at scale.

If we stay true to our mission of education, accessibility, and innovation, the future of Slate is a world where flossing is finally easy, finally effective, and finally part of everyone’s daily routine.
