In Graduate School, professors loved to discuss "Design Thinking." Design Thinking is an iterative process in which we seek to understand the user, challenge assumptions, and redefine problems to identify alternative strategies and solutions that might not be instantly apparent with our initial level of understanding (Dam and Siang). Design Thinking enables companies to understand consumer needs.

In this article series, I contacted different companies to learn how organizations apply Design Thinking. I spoke with Maboh The Label founder Michelle Borrayo learn more about the company.

1. What makes Maboh The Label different from other swim brands?

What makes Maboh The Label different is the level of intention behind every piece. I really pride myself on sourcing high-quality fabrics that not only feel luxurious, but also provide support and comfort. One detail that is very important to us is that we use the same fabric on both the inside and outside of the bikinis, so when the suit moves or stretches you don’t see a visible lining. It creates a much cleaner and more elevated look. We also work with fabrics that are non-toxic and environmentally conscious because sustainability and longevity are very important to the brand. We want our pieces to feel timeless, flattering, and made to last.

2. How has Maboh The Label evolved since its founding?

Maboh The Label originally started as a ready-to-wear brand, but our passion was always beachwear. Over time, we naturally evolved into swimwear because it felt the most authentic to our lifestyle and vision. We first introduced cover-ups and resort-inspired pieces, and later integrated swimwear into the collections. Our goal was always to create elevated basics that women could wear season after season. Some of our bestselling pieces, like the Miami Set and the Vero Bottom, were designed to be timeless staples that are flattering, comfortable, and perfect for tanning while still feeling chic and effortless.

3. How does Maboh The Label incorporate its mission and vision into its pieces?

Our mission has always been centered around confidence and making women feel their best in their own skin. We focus heavily on fit and design details that accentuate the right areas of the body while still feeling comfortable and wearable. That’s why we manufacture our swimwear in Brazil, which is known worldwide for producing some of the best-fitting swimwear. Brazilian craftsmanship and cuts really understand how to flatter different body types, and that aligns perfectly with our vision for the brand. Every piece is designed to help women feel confident, feminine, and empowered.

4. What advice would you give to students and young professionals who want to start their own line?

The biggest advice I would give is to simply start. I personally spent years wanting to begin but feeling overwhelmed because I didn’t know where to start or what the “perfect” first step was. The reality is that there is no perfect way to do it. You learn through experience, mistakes, and consistency over time. Once you finally take that first step, everything starts to unfold naturally and you begin to find your own path throughout the journey. Starting is the hardest part, but it’s also the most important part. Once you start, you will never stop.

5. What is the future of the company?

The future of Maboh The Label is something I’m very excited about. One of our biggest goals is to eventually open our first brick-and-mortar retail space in Fort Lauderdale, where we’ve built such an amazing community. From there, we hope to continue expanding into areas like Delray Beach and Palm Beach as the brand continues to grow. At the same time, Miami will always be a huge part of our identity, so we definitely plan to continue doing pop-ups and activations there as well. More than anything, we want to continue building a strong community around the brand while creating elevated swimwear and lifestyle experiences.
