In today's world, matcha makes one thing clear: green is good. Packed with antioxidants (including polyphenols like catechins) and phytochemicals such as chlorophyll and quercetin, matcha drinkers consume less caffeine per serving than regular coffee drinkers and enjoy a gentler, more sustained energy boost (Frank, 2024).

It's ironic that in a culture obsessed with instant gratification, the drink of choice for many Millennials and Gen Zers offers a prolonged effect. When you start a business, instant gratification is rare. Entrepreneurs sacrifice time and money to bring their ideas to life. In the marketplace of ideas, how can matcha, which takes longer to prepare than coffee, be the beverage you need?

These were some of the questions swirling in the minds of Alma Matcha Co-Founders Jessica Binder and Taymir Terrell. They've brought a slice of Los Angeles cool and New York sophistication to the relaxed atmosphere of South Florida. I spoke with them to learn more about their journey.

Alma Matcha Interview
1. What makes a good matcha?
A high-quality matcha should boast a vibrant green hue, a velvety smooth texture, and a perfectly balanced flavor profile. At our cafe, we take pride in using a generous 5 grams of ceremonial organic matcha powder, which surpasses the standard volume and quality offered by most other cafes.

2. What is the reason you created Alma Matcha?
Alma Matcha was born out of our deep passion for matcha and our desire to share this love with our local community. We saw a unique opportunity to offer a dedicated matcha experience, unlike any other business in the area that combines matcha with coffee.

3. How has Alma Matcha evolved since it started?
Alma Matcha has undergone a transformation through the expansion of our product range, collaborations with like-minded brands, and a strong focus on sustainability and ethical sourcing. Our journey is a continuous evolution alongside our community.
4. Why did you decide to open a brick and mortar location?
The decision to establish a physical Alma Matcha location was driven by our desire to provide customers with a tangible space to immerse themselves in our full range of products and to foster a sense of community around our brand.
5. What advice would you give to students and young professionals who want to start a business?
Our advice for students and young professionals is to conduct thorough research, surround yourself with a supportive team, and be open to adapting and learning from challenges. Passion and dedication are key - if you're not fully obsessed with your idea, it's unlikely others will be too.

6. What is the next chapter?
The future of Alma Matcha will see us expanding into new markets, introducing exciting new products, and spreading awareness about the numerous benefits of matcha to a broader audience. We are committed to taking our brand to new heights.
